The
"Koss Method" for Seed Sprouting
by Joe
Koss
Materials
Needed
1. Cookie sheet
2 .Two white felt
pieces the inside size of the cookie sheet.
3. Two 1/4 inch
wood slats x the size of the width of the pan plus a
little to overhang.
4. A piece of glass
the size of the pan , to fit over the wooden slats .
5. Several 8 inch
peat pots for transplanting seedlings.
6 . Good potting soil
to fill the 8" pots
7 . Miracle grow to
fertilize the seedlings
Instruction
1. Place one felt
piece on the cookie sheet.
2 . Place one seed
in the middle of every square inch across and down.
3 . Place the second
sheet of felt over the seeds and first sheet of felt.
4 . Slightly warm
a pint of water, just enough to take the chill away.
5 . Pour the water
over the felt sheets and seeds or into the cookie sheet, do this slowly
as not to disturb the seeds. Water until both sheets are completely soaked
.
6. Place one wood
slat on one end over the lips or edge of the cookie pan place the
other wood slate on the opposite end.
7 . Place the glass
over the wood slats this will create space between the seeds and the glass
and help circulate fresh air and not over heat the seeds. The temperature
should be between 75/90 degrees 85° is ideal
8 . Place your "Test
Greenhouse" in a warm, shaded sunny window . You must check the moisture
content from time to time. Never allow the felt to dry out. Don't allow
the sun to over heat the greenhouse. A small temp gage
should take care of this problem or remove the greenhouse to a cooler
spot.
9 . The seeds should
appear in 4/7 days in some cases depending on the variety it will take
longer 7/42 days.
10 .When the embryo breaks
though the outer coating, after the roots start invading the felt take
scissors and cut the felt around the seedling roots and all and remove
the seedling from this environment. The root will penetrate the felt when
transplanted.
11 . Transplant the seedling
to the 8" peat pots.
12 . When the seedling has
grown both true leaves and all frost has endedplant in the permanent place
in the gourdpatch.
