How to Make Gourd Paper and Ornaments
by Jean McClintock   (Submitted by Diane)

When I was searching around for instructions to make gourd paper, I happened upon Jean McClintock and she sent me the instructions.   Here goes.

You will need:
    Sponge
Gourd innards (discard hard lumps and seeds)
100% Cotton Paper. (you can get a package at Wal Mart for around $3.00)
    Blender
    Water
Screen Frame (Fry pan screen lid - If you can not find a frying pan screen lid,  you can make a screen by using an old picture frame and screen (the kind you use for your screen doors).  Cut the screen to fit on your frame, then staple the screen to the back side.
    Towels
    Strainer

Tear up cotton paper and gourd innards and place into large bowl or old plastic wash tub.   I use equal amounts of paper to equal amounts of gourd.  Fill about half way up with water and let soak overnight.  Place in blender.  You may have to add more water, about half way up in the blender.  Set the blender on Mix (about medium speed) and blend until the paper is a nice mushy mix.  It will look like oatmeal.

Take the pulp from the blender and dump into strainer to get out as much of the water as possible.  You can use the back side of a wooden spoon to mash out the water.   Spray your screen with  a vegetable coating (I use Pam) to prevent sticking.   Lay out old towels and put pulp onto your screen.  Spread around and sponge off as much water as possible.  Note: this will not be a thin paper, but has really a neat natural look.  Let paper air dry overnight.  If paper curls up, place it between heavy books and it will flatten out.

I tear it into odd shapes and it makes a great hang tag on your gourd pieces.

To make ornaments:

Take paper pulp and place some into a terra cotta cookie mold.  Wilton makes these and you can find them in the cake and candy department in most craft stores.  I use terra cotta since it absorbs the excess water in the pulp and dries faster.  Also, lightly spray the mold with Pam .

Let it dry overnight or bake it in a 275 degree oven for about 20 min.  Pop out of mold and you are ready to decorate.  You can leave it natural or paint the raised parts.  If it is ragged around the edges, leave it for a nice natural look.   Then punch a small hole in top and add your ribbon or raffia to hang it by.   You can also just hot glue the ribbon or raffia to the back of the ornament.
