Wireless FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost?
Prices start at only 39.99 per month, but vary due to many options. Please contact our sales department at (330) 674-6775 (option 1) for more information.

How fast is it?
From 256kb down to 3mbps down. Stop by our office, and give it a try. We are sure that you'll like it!

Will Valkyrie Wireless require additional equipment?
Yes. A wireless radio and small antenna will need to be installed on your house or business. A thin ethernet cable is all that will be installed inside.

Can I install the equipment myself?
Yes. We provide instructions for self installation. However, you will be responsible for damaged equipment, and any damage caused by improper installation.

Can I purchase the equipment?
Yes. You can save the monthly rental fee by purchasing the equipment. A 90 day warranty is provided for the equipment.

Can I change from rental to purchase?
Yes. We will apply 50% of the rental fees you have paid towards our normal sales price of your equipment.

What are my computer requirements?
Our service is compatible with virtually all computers with an ethernet port. Most modern computers come with an ethernet port, but if you need one, we offer PCI ethernet cards for a modest fee.

Does this use my telephone or cable tv lines?
No. The Internet connection is transmitted via microwave signal from our towers to the radio installed on your roof.

Do I have to log in like I did with my modem?
No. Your radio maintains a connection with our tower, and handles details like logging in. Your connection is "always on", ready for your use!

What areas do you cover?
We are rolling out service in Millersburg, although our equipment can handle distances up to 15 miles. We offer service to Northern Wayne County, specifically Creston and Sterling, and surrounding areas. Also we have service available to parts of Central Wayne county. We'll be expanding to other areas, so keep an eye on our web page if we can't serve you now.

Do I need an unobstructed view of your tower?
Yes and no. Some areas are covered with FHSS equipment, and other areas are served with 900mhz. FHSS operates in the ISM microwave frequency range, and line of sight provides the best level of service. Our choice of towers will provide commanding views to allow most users to gain access. In some cases, trees and other buildings may cause obstructions, which should be overcome using a taller mast at your location. Areas served with our 900mhz gear do not require line of site. Please contact us for information about your specific location.

What about interference?
One of the largest influencing factors on our choice of FHSS radio gear was interference. FHSS works by rapidly switching frequencies, and can lock out frequencies that are experiencing noise, or other interference. This makes FHSS less likely to be troubled by other wireless devices. 900mhz can have issues with portable telephones and certain baby monitors.

What about weather? Can rain, snow or fog interfere?
Severe weather can influence signal strength, especially at longer distances, but most likely not at a level that will be noticeable to our customers.

Is it secure?
FHSS is considered to be very secure. According to Bruno Forgue* "A potential eavesdropper sees FHSS communication changing its frequency band in a random way.", "It would take some fairly specialized interception equipment to mirror the frequency changes uninvited; the frequency sequence must be known to recover the data buried in the signal. Each radio in the network of course knows which sub-band to work at each instant, how to synchronize with the network and avoid collisions". This would indicate that eavesdropping FHSS is way above the average hacker. That said, customers should be aware of security issues, and use measures such as SSL or tunneling when transmitting sensitive data over wireless networks. Customers interested in FHSS technology should check out the following links: Frequency-hopping spread spectrum , Wireless LAN Technology and Network Implementation , Secure wireless networks for industrial applications , or frequency-hopping spread spectrum. Our 900mhz gear offers DES encryption, which provides a strong level of security.

Where are your towers?
A complete list of tower locations can be found here, at our tower location page.

I'm interested, but how can I be sure that I'll be able to get service?
No problem! Call our sales office (330) 674-6775 (option 1), and we'll ask a few questions about your location. If we feel you are a candidate, we will set up a free Site Survey where we'll stop by and make sure you will have a strong signal, or perform a software survey that will give us a good idea if service is available at your location.
